The Vine: October 7, 2026
Our fresh take on The Vine, a devotional based on the upcoming Sunday’s sermon. This is a tool for you to dive deep into specific verses of scripture and get acquainted with spiritual practices. This iteration of The Vine pairs perfectly with the pastors’ “First Glance Podcast.” The Vine: First Glance Podcast is when the pastors sit down to discuss the scripture for the upcoming sermon. It is a wonderful opportunity to prepare your mind and heart for the week ahead. We invite you to make this a part of your individual spiritual growth throughout the week.
I Commit to Praying...
"Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you."(1 Thessalonians 5:16-18)
When we join the church, we promise to support it with our prayers, our presence, our gifts, our service, and our witness. Prayers come first. Perhaps that is because prayer grounds everything else. Yet “pray without ceasing” can sound like a standard none of us will ever meet. Who can pray every minute?
Maybe St. Paul isn't asking for more words. Perhaps he is inviting us to stay near. The psalmist says, “I have calmed and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with its mother” (Psalm 131:2). A weaned child isn't asking for anything. She is simply close, resting in love.
That is where praying for our church and community begins. We sit in God's presence and let people and needs rise to our awareness: the tired teacher, the stretched ministry, the neighbor worried about bills, the family with nowhere to turn. Sometimes no words are necessary—only a name, a face, and an awareness of God's nearness. We simply hold space for others before God, trusting that the One who loves us also loves them.
And we do not pray alone. The Holy Spirit prays with us and for us, interceding “with sighs too deep for words” (Romans 8:26). Even our silence is gathered into a prayer larger than our own. Over time, prayer becomes less a task on our list and more a way of life—a way of staying near to God and carrying one another in love.
An Invitation
This week, set aside two minutes each day. Sit still. Breathe. Let the faces, needs, and joys of our church and community rise before you. Whisper, “Lord, here they are.” Then carry one name with you through the day, trusting God to carry you both.
