The Vine: May 25, 2026
“Abide in me as I abide in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in me. I am the Vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing”
This is a weekly reflection on the previous week’s sermon text. Each week there will be a devotional related to the scripture for the week, along with questions for reflection/discussion, as well as prayer. Feel free to make this a part of your individual spiritual growth throughout the week or utilize in small group settings (growth groups, Sunday school, etc.)
Acts 2:1-4
2 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.
Pentecost is the day the Church took its first breath. Before Acts 2, the disciples were waiting, praying, hoping, and wondering what Jesus meant when He said, “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you.” Pentecost is the moment that promise became reality. It is the moment heaven breathed into humanity again.
Birthdays matter. They mark beginnings, identity, and purpose. Pentecost is the Church’s birthday because it is the moment the Spirit formed a people who would carry the life of Jesus into the world.
Acts 2 tells us that the disciples were all together in one place when suddenly a sound like a rushing wind filled the house. Tongues of fire rested on each of them. They began to speak in languages they had never learned. The crowd heard the gospel in their own tongues.
Pentecost is not about spectacle. It is about empowerment. It is God saying: You are not alone. You are not powerless. You are not without direction. My Spirit is in you.
Pentecost is not a story we admire from a distance. It is a story we live inside. The same Spirit who filled that upper room fills the Church today. The same Spirit who empowered Peter empowers us. The same Spirit who created a new community continues to shape us into Christ’s body.
Pentecost reminds us that the Christian life is not lived by effort alone but by Spirit-enabled participation in God’s mission.
The Apostles’ Creed:
If Pentecost is the Church’s first breath, the Apostles’ Creed is the Church learning to speak.
The Creed is not a list of doctrines; it is a declaration of identity. It tells us who God is, who we are, and what story we belong to.
When early Christians said, “I believe,” they were not reciting information. They were pledging allegiance. They were locating themselves inside the life of the Triune God.
The Creed is the Church’s heartbeat—steady, ancient, trustworthy.
Pentecost gives the Church its life. The Creed gives the Church its language.
Pentecost forms a Spirit-filled community. The Creed forms a believing community.
Pentecost empowers mission. The Creed anchors identity.
Together they remind us that the Christian life is both Spirit-filled and rooted, both alive and anchored, both experiential and confessional.
As you read this, the same Spirit who moved in Acts 2 is moving in you. The same Spirit who formed the first believers is forming you. The same Spirit who gave the Church its voice is giving you yours.
Pentecost is not just the Church’s birthday. It is an invitation to breathe again.
And the Apostles’ Creed is not just an ancient statement. It is your reminder that you belong to a story bigger than your own.
Prayer:
Holy Spirit, breathe in me as You breathed into the Church on that first Pentecost. Anchor me in the faith handed down through the Apostles’ Creed. Make me bold in witness, steady in belief, and alive with Your presence. Form me into the likeness of Christ, for the sake of the world You love. Amen.
QUESTION FOR REFLECTION:
Where in your life do you most need the Spirit’s fresh wind right now?
How have you experienced the Spirit’s empowerment in ways that surprised you?
When you say, “I believe,” what are you most consciously affirming?
How might your daily life change if you lived as though Pentecost is still happening?
