“Abide in me as I abide in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in me. I am the Vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing”
Our fresh take on The Vine, a devotional based on the upcoming Sunday’s sermon. This is a tool for you to dive deep into specific verses of scripture and get acquainted with spiritual practices. This iteration of The Vine pairs perfectly with the pastors’ “First Glance Podcast.” The Vine: First Glance Podcast is when the pastors sit down to discuss the scripture for the upcoming sermon. It is a wonderful opportunity to prepare your mind and heart for the week ahead. We invite you to make this a part of your individual spiritual growth throughout the week.
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”
Psalm 119:105
This Bible verse is found in the longest chapter in the Bible, a Hebrew acrostic poem written by the psalmist to remind us of the key role God’s word plays in our lives. For him, and for us, God’s word illuminates our hearts, guides our paths, and teaches us how to live the good and beautiful life God intends. In a world filled with many voices and different ways of viewing life, God’s word helps us see the world through his eyes. Corrie Ten Boom, famed Holocaust survivor, explains, "God's viewpoint is sometimes different from ours — so different that we could not even guess at it unless He had given us a Book which tells us such things."
The Bible reveals to us the ways of God. It also reveals his heart for all of creation. In the scriptures we discover not only the story of God, but our story as well. In the Bible we discover the arc of God’s love pursuing us, strengthening us, and inviting us into relationship. Scripture does not merely inform us about God—it draws us into God. No wonder John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, declared, “O give me that book! At any price, give me the book of God!”
Spiritual Practice: Lectio Divina
Choose one short passage in the Bible—even a single verse. Read it slowly, four times. First, to hear the words. Second, to notice what word or phrase catches your attention. Third, to pray from that place. Fourth, to simply rest in God’s presence with what you have received. This is less Bible study and more listening.
One Thing: Memorize Psalm 119:105
Memorize today’s scripture. When you face a decision or wonder what to do, say it aloud. Let it be a prayer as much as a verse: “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”
