You the Body: Volunteers in Mission

You the Body represents two things:

  1. Wherever you go in service, you are the Body of Christ in the world.
  2. All missions that we do as a church outside greater Round Rock and Mission Panama. We pray that each person that you impact will feel the love of God.

Upcoming Opportunity

Report from Victoria – February 2019
13 volunteers braved cold temperatures, rain and wind to bring hope to many of those still recovering from Hurricane Harvey. The first day, a team of four cleaned up three sites. This closed out those cases and allowed more families to be added into the system. The rest of the day was spent doing assessments and getting supplies ready for the work to be done over the weekend. Friday night the remainder of the team arrived. We had 6 newbies so we had to show them around the church…shower trailer, kitchen and sleeping quarters. After a few games of pool, air hockey and indoor basketball, we called it a night.
Projects were discussed at breakfast the next morning and teams assigned and lunches packed. We had three teams at various locations. Our first team textured 3 rooms and hallways. This included masking off floors and furniture. After a bit of mechanical issues, this team completed their task. Our second team had to demo an entire section of a house, weather seal that portion of the exposed area and tarp the remaining roof. Tarping the roof was a difficult task, due to high winds and misty rain, but the task was completed by a very determined team! Our third team cleared a bedroom that had mold. The drywall and all trim was removed. Yes, they were wearing the required respirators to protect them from breathing the mold. This house also needed a tarp, but the rain had set in by this time.
Dinner was homemade chicken pot pies ( thank you Patti Ruth) and we were joined by Marcus, UMCOR Rio conference manager. Unfortunately the weather did not cooperate, so we were not able to plan projects on Sunday. We accomplished a lot in a short time and enabled five more families to be added to the system. This is very important because there are still over 1,000 homes that are in need of repair.
As I mentioned earlier, this group of 13 had 6 that had not been on a trip before. You would never have known the difference. Everyone pitched in and worked hard through adverse weather to get things done. First Church should be very proud of each and every one of them. Love Goes First!

High School and Middle School Mission Trips

Kairos Prison Ministry

Kairos Prison Ministry at First Church takes two forms. The first is service through a spiritual retreat weekend for prisoners called Kairos. This is part of the Emmaus Ministry family. Interested persons can participate by signing up to serve on a team or by providing support such as baking cookies or making placemats.  The second is New Life in Christ, a correspondence program with inmates in local prisons. Contact Cheryl Glasgow for information about women’s Kairos Ministry opportunities. Contact Lucas McLane for information about men’s Kairos Ministry opportunities. Click here for more information.

Military/First Responder Network

First Church’s Military/First Responder Network is a group of people who are interested in supporting our military and first responders (police, fire, and EMS) and their families.  This support takes many forms, from networking with our regional military bases to support active and veteran military to projects as simple as Cookies for the Troops, which sent home-baked cookies to our service men and women overseas in the middle east. We are always looking for ways to support our unsung heroes! Contact Doyle Young.

Small Group Missional Initiatives

Small groups which meet at First Church regularly serve in the mission field.  From volunteering at the Round Rock Area Serving Center to supporting local women’s shelters, from taking part in Great Day of Service to supporting animal shelters, the missions supported by First Church’s small groups are widely varied. For more information on First Church small groups, click here.

UMCOR and Disaster Response

UMCOR – United Methodist Committee on Relief – is a United Methodist Church ministry whose goal is to assist the most vulnerable people affected by crisis without regard to their race, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. Reaching people in more than 80 countries, including the United States, they provide humanitarian relief when war, conflict, or natural disaster disrupt life to such an extent that communities are unable to recover on their own. Get more information on UMCOR’s website.

First Church Disaster Response

First United Methodist Church – Round Rock responds to emergencies and disasters with a team of UMCOR trained individuals.  Contact Dave Scott (txgolfersall@gmail.com) to get trained and for more information. Click here for more information about Disaster Response.

United Methodist Apportionments

United Methodists support the ministries of the church through apportioned funds, which combines resources from many churches so that we can accomplish what no single church, district or annual conference ever could hope to do alone. Get more information on apportionments here.
