5/12/2008 . . . POPS 2008 WAS A FUN & GLORIOUS EVENING! A GOOD TIME WAS HAD BY ALL!! TO DATE, WE HAVE COLLECTED $3300.00 FOR HOSPICE AUSTIN! THANKS TO ALL WHO WORKED SO HARD TO MAKE THIS CONCERT A SUCCESS! PICTURES WILL ALSO BE POSTED SOON!

WHAT IS POPS?

The Handbell Ministry of First United Methodist Church Round Rock presented POPS 2008, "Good Vibrations" on Saturday, May 10. This benefit concert took place in the Family Life Center of the church campus at 1004 North Mays, Round Rock, Texas. Doors opened at 5:15. Dinner began at 5:30pm. The concert began at 6:30pm. The room was packed!

The music of POPS featured our two 5-octave perfoming handbell teams, Jubilation and Council Oak Bells.  Also featured was the dynamic virtuosity of the "Sound of Joy" bell duet and friends. Audience members enjoyed repertoire supporting our 2008 theme, "Good Vibrations." They enjoyed the strains of original compositions written especially for handbells, as well as the pop favorites, "Classical Gas", "In the Mood", "Sing a Rainbow" "Chicken Dance" . . . and many more! Special lighting effect and video brought home the message of hope through Jesus Christ . . . the One who gives us the good vibrations we need to serve Him.

All profits collected at POPS 2008 will go to Hospice Austin. The concert was performed in loving memory of First Church member, Elaine Kent, who died January 13, 2008 of Metastatic Lung Cancer. Elaine was a tireless volunteer who donated her time and talents to the Music Ministry of First Church for many years. Her children, Andrew and Afton, were both active participants during their middle school and high school years within both the choral and handbell areas of the Music Ministry. Elaine herself provided snack suppers for weekly youth music rehearsals and also chaired refreshment committes for many big handbell productions including Christmas Bellfest and POPS. In the final months of Elaine's sweet life, Hospice Austin provided emotional, spiritual and medical support to the Kent family. A free-will offering was taken in Elaine's memory to benefit this worthwhile organization.

At POPS, the First Church Family Life Center transformed into a dinner theatre atmosphere. Tables were decorated in festive style. Audience members were asked to secure reserved seating prior to the event. All seating was reserved. It was "bring your own peanut butter sandwiches to gourmet" as those in attendance ate and enjoyed one another's company. Beverages (tea, lemonade and coffe) were provided. Most tables sat 6 people. Some of these rectangular "6-tops" combined for 12-top seating.

THANKS TO ALL WHO PARTICIPATED IN THIS BENEFIT CONCERT!
