On Sunday, March 4, the most recent "Handbell Rookie Training Camp" concluded a 5-week session. Nine new ringers attended class each Sunday morning from 9:45-10:30am in the Handbell Suite of the Sanctuary. During these lessons, students began at the very beginning. Director of First Church's Handbell Ministry, Carla David, observes, "I like to encourage those who have never before read music to take this class. Handbell ringing is an excellent way to begin learning that skill!"

This year's rookies agreed! "I just wish the classes were longer in duration," exclaims rookie Lois Naughton. "I enjoyed it a lot," adds fellow rookie, Kay Littlefield. "It was challenging, but great fun!" Rookie classes are short-term commitments in which participants are not required to perform or even to join the Handbell Ministry upon completion. "But I have noticed that many get hooked when they try ringing! That always makes me happy!" laughs director Carla David.

Handbell Rookie Training Camps are offered at First Church Round Rock to adults and high school students who have never before rung handheld instruments. In additon, some rookie classes are made up of those who HAVE rung before but would like to dust off skills from the past. Class are formed based upon interest & are grouped according to experience. Registrations are taken all year long.
