A Wesleyan Theology for Today

This class will be led by Rev. Roger Harmon, D. Min., and presents participants with the opportunity to discuss and examine Wesleyan theology in the context of contemporary needs and issues.

Based on the book by John B. Cobb which approaches the problems and issues we face today as United Methodists from the perspective and tradition of our founder, John Wesley. "Wesley's greatness lay in his ability to size up the situation of his time accurately and to shape a ministry that was amazingly effective in that situation." (from the Preface) Participants in this class will be discussing the needs and issues of our time and how as United Methodists, we might structure our ministry to effectively meet those needs and address those issues.

Participants will explore such topics as...

  • the relationship between GRACE and RESPONSIBILITY
  • God's presence in the World
  • Wesley's doctrines of Love and Faith
  • God's pardon and the related topics of salvation, justification, human sinfulness, and assurance
  • God's transformative work through sanctification and new birth
  • the role of Law
  • openness to difference (looking at Wesleyans and religious pluralism today)
  • the Wesleyan Quadrilateral -- a theological method utilizing tradition, scripture, reason, and experience.
