“While shepherds watched their flocks by night…”

The shepherds in the Christmas story are “warm fuzzy” sorts of characters! They are all too much like us. They have work to do – actually some of the least appreciated work of Israel’s life. They were night-shift folks, and only got a bit of a break when they would work with each other to care for their gathered flocks. In an odd way, Jesus arrival is first announced to folks going about their regular routines, rather than to special leaders.

As we wait for God to come to us, we also realize that life goes on, that our routines and chores will still be with us, and that changes will not come all at once. In the church, short of starting over, we will have some groups meeting, and projects going on, and friendships to nurture, and all the highs and lows of daily life to live through.

We need to ask ourselves then, where we find God in our every day life. I read recently of a family where every day at evening, each person had to report some miracle of nature they had noticed. Can we make a daily report of noticing God in our lives?

WHERE DID WE SEE GOD TODAY?

WHEN DID YOU REPRESENT GOD TODAY?

Prayer: Lord, you are always near us, and so familiar that sometimes we con't notice you. Open our eyes to your loving presence, and help us rejoice that you do love the world so much. Amen.
