“They brought him to the temple (as written in the Law...” (Luke 2:22)

Mary and Joseph remain an example for us! As we receive the gift of God’s grace, they remind us that the “Law” is still a righteous directive for life! That law has gotten a bad reputation is partly a result of our trying to get around it, to avoid it and make excuses for why we should be exempted from particular parts of it. As the exceptions grow, and more and more loopholes appear, “laws” become laughingstock.

Jesus’ parents give another witness. They followed the ancient law, presented Jesus and made the sacrifices prescribed. Their example holds clues for us today, as well, as we seek to follow Christ.

For one, they were regular in attending to God's word and worship (we’d call it “church-going” today, I suppose) refusing to be strangers in the temple or synagogue. On this Sunday we are reminded that we receive God’s guidance best when we have stayed close to the source as well.

Another lesson is that from his birth Mary and Joseph intended – both by word and deed – to raise this child (indeed all their children – Jesus’ brother James later becomes a leader in the church) to be familiar with the Word of God. How many children today are baptized, only to disappear from the halls of the church?

Once more the common challenge raises its head: “What example do we set for our children and neighbors?” We could do far worse than follow the example of Mary and Joseph!

ARE WE STAYING CLOSE TO GOD’S WORD, AND LEADING OTHERS TO IT?

Prayer: Holy God, on this Lord’s Day remind us that you gave us a Sabbath to help us grow in wisdom and grace, and pour your Spirit on us to teach us your ways. Amen.
