“We have seen His star and have come to worship Him…”
What made the Wise Men continue on their journey for all those days? We have a hint when they meet with Herod and the scholars of Israel: they had some knowledge and were seeking more. They are not called “wise men” because they did foolish quests, but for their deep wisdom in the lore of the world, and their desire to know still more. Indeed, they were able to recognize the dreams directing them away from Herod after they had completed their quest – something we don’t usually pay much attention to.
So, wisdom and knowledge might be other gifts we could bring to Jesus for his birthday. “Knowledge” we tend to think about in terms of “book learning” – but it has a place in our world. We are “people of the Book” ourselves, and can be students of God’s word in scripture. Book learning is one way of saving wisdom and passing it on from generation to generation. “Wisdom” has more to do with observing closely the events which take place, and being able to guide others past obstacles and toward a deeper understanding of themselves and their worlds. Both have a part.
Could you bring knowledge and wisdom to the manger of the Lord? Certainly there are times when our experiences in the church and world can help others. It might be supporting someone through a time which you have already experienced. It could be in providing leadership to the church or a group in it. What wisdom and knowledge do you have to give?
HOW HAS THE CHURCH OF JESUS BENEFITED FROM YOUR KNOWLEDGE AND WISDOM?
Prayer: Almighty God, you made all that is in our world. Help us understand the world we live in, the people we live around, and the ways we can share our understanding with all your children. Amen.
